Anyone into skin care will have heard the term Exfoliation..

Exfoliation is the process of removing old, dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface, to help maintain healthy skin. Exfoliation is a very important part of skin care routine, be it any skin type (OILY, DRY OR COMBINATION), But Exfoliating Acne prone skin is not just important, but necessary and also with caution.

Acne-prone skin produces more dead skin cells than normal and these cells don’t shed properly and they remain stuck on the skin’s surface creating a clog (leading to whiteheads and blackheads). That’s the reason regular exfoliation is so important for acne prone skin types. There are over hundreds of exfoliating products and procedures available today, but all are found in one of two forms: Physical and Chemical Exfoliation.

Am talking about Physical Exfoliation.

Physical Exfoliation involves manually removing dead skin cells with the help of an abrasive ingredient. Like an over-the-counter scrub, or a professional procedure, such as micro dermabrasion. Physical scrubs leave your skin feeling soft and smooth, gets rid off the dead skin cell for a clearer skin.

So here are some Scrubs have used so far that you can consider.

QUEEN HELENE MINT JULEP SCRUB – Love this scrub. I apply it on my face and leave it on for like 5minutes, allowing the mint to go in and rinse off. Its available on http://www.thebeautyboon.com

AVEENO POSITIVELY RADIANT SKIN BRIGHTENING DAILY SCRUB – Have been using this scrub for years and I love it. It leaves my skin clean and brightened. Its also gentle enough to be used everyday. (Gotten from Thebeautyboon)

OLAY REGENERIST LUMINOUS BRIGHTENING CREAM CLEANSER – This is a cleanser, but has very fine micro beads in it so I also consider it an exfoliator.. It’s nice, creamy and also brightens. Cause I have oily skin and this Olay cleanser is creamy, I always like to cleanse first with an ACNE wash to take off all the oil before using this.. Can’t find this anywhere online in Naija, I got it from a supermarket in my area.

GLAMGLOW EXFOLIATING SCRUB –  Got this deluxe size in a Glamglow mask set..It a gentle exfoliator.. Has no bead at all. Its just like a mud exfoliator and I definitely love it.. Its gentle enough to be used daily. You can preorder this from @the_df_store on instagram if you are in Nigeria.

CLEARACIL ULTRA RAPID ACTION FACE SCRUB –  Another favourite of mine..Clears the skin and brightens with continues use. Used three to four times a week. (Gotten from Thebeautyboon)

ST’IVES BLEMISH CONTROL APRICOT SCRUB – Have had this for long tho. I hardly use it because the beads are too big..But if you don’t mind that, you can try it. (Thebeautyboon)

MURAD SKIN SMOOTHING POLISH – Congested pores? just pick this up, gently rub on your face in a circular motion, leave for 5minutes then rinse off and you will instantly feel  fresh air going into your skin.i use it twice a week. Truly exfoliates and clears my pores . Gotten from Montaigneplace at Ikeja City Mall.

MURAD AHA/BHA EXFOLIATING CLEANSE – Leaves my skin clean and clear. Gentle enough to be used everyday. love it. Also from Montaigneplace

NOTE: When I said “Exfoliating is necessary but with CAUTION” on acne prone skin. Here is why, a scrub ( especially those with huge beads) leads to friction on the skin that can irritate already inflamed skin, cause redness and promote additional breakouts. So I would suggest that if you have active inflamed acne on your face, you should avoid physical exfoliators or choose the kind of scrubs that are very mild on the skin with the tiniest beads or no beads at all.

Please ALWAYS do your research on ingredients of what you are buying before you buy. Its important please.

If you need help choosing an exfoliant, don’t hesitate to ask your dermatologist for guidance. Your doctor will be able to recommend a product or procedure that is both safe and effective for your skin.

Unless recommended by your doctor, avoid using several exfoliating products at the same time. Doing so may cause redness, excessive dryness, peeling, and considerable irritation.

If you leave in Nigerian and you want to get any of this, ask in the comment section and I will reply.

Have a fab day.

So last week I talked about Acne cleanser HERE,which is the first step to an acne free skin. Today am going to talk about acne treatment.

If you think just an acne cleanser with get rid of all your acne and stop them from returning, girlll think again.. Trust me, it takes more than just cleansing. Dermatologists recommend fighting it with a three-step regimen: a salicylic acid cleanser, a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment, and a daily oil free moisturizer. And also some personal steps, like exercising, drinking water etc.. Here is my second step, my skin is combination to oily .

Topical acne medications, commonly used for acne, are those that you put on your skin. They are in form of Lotion, gel, or cream. Acne treatments usually contains an active ingredients: Benzoyl peroxide and Salicylic acid, These are great at fighting pimples, helps reduce the amount of oil your body produces and fights inflammation. These chemicals help existing blemishes heal and prevent new ones from forming. Some are concentrated that you apply a thin coating on your skin in the morning and before bedtime after washing your face, then others can be applied all over the face morning and before bed avoiding the eye area.

Benzoyl peroxide and Salicylic acid clear dirt and oil from your face. But can peel, dry you out and get itchy on the skin if used the wrong way( it happened to me). With Benzoyl peroxide its best to just apply on the affected(where your acne normally appear) and not all over the face. If your acne is all over your face, use them once or twice a day and if it’s drying you out or irritating your skin, switch out your cleanser for a gentle formula instead of one with salicylic acid. Because both can easily strip your skin of moisture.

Do not use these acne treatments on your neck or eye area. Very important guys.. The tissue around your eyes is very thin and delicate. These treatments are much too active and irritating to be used near the eyes and on the neck. Always allow your acne treatment dry thoroughly before going to bed or before applying another skincare products. Also you know Sunscreen is important right? especially when using products like these.. Its compulsory..

So here are the acne treatment have used so far.

First up is URBANSKINRX Acne Control Spot Treatment.($ 24.00)

Active Ingredient: Benzoyl Peroxide 5%/10%

Inactive Ingredients: Carbomer, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Water

I used this to the last drop and I will definitely repurchase.. This definitely works great for me. When I want to use this,I apply it on the area where acne normally apply and this can be used everyday.

Next is CLEARASIL ULTRA Rapid Vanishing Treatment Cream. (4500Naira)

Active Ingredient: Benzoyl Peroxide 10%

I love this for all over my face treatment. I don’t experience any harsh dryness at all on my face when I use it. I got this in the monthly subscription box from Beauty boon(www.thebeautyboon.com). I would recommend this for people with mild or occasional acne. Sorry I don’t know the price of this in dollar.

Also I have here Acne.org Treatment Gel. $19.29 (I got this from @the_df_store on instagram, you can order from her stuffs you can’t find in Nigeria)

Active Ingredient: 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide

Also Contains: Water, Butylene Glycol, Carbomer, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Sodium Hydroxide.

This also works really well, but should be applied JUST on the affected area. With just 2.5% of benzoyl peroxide, you had think it would be mild, but no girl it can be excessively drying and itchy on the skin. So use with caution.

Lastly  is MARIO BADESCU Drying Lotion. ($17.00)

Isopropyl Alcohol,Aqua (Water,Eau), Calamine, Camphor,Sulfur, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Talc,Glycerin, Salicylic Acid

Just started using this and I hardly have acne now, So I don’t really have much to say.  But it has some nice reviews, so you can check it out.

So this is all I have so far, you can check any of them out. And you just need one treatment not all, (Don’t be like me) and also you don’t have to buy this exact products, just make sure anyone you get has any of the active ingredient ( benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid). (Please always know the type of ingredient going on your skin)
